The Investment Leadership Team provides strategic direction to Railpen to ensure that it continues to fulfil its mission to pay members' pensions securely, affordably and sustainably.
  • Julian Cripps

    Julian Cripps, MD Investment Business

    Julian is Managing Director of Railpen the £27 billion investment business of the Railways Pension Scheme. His responsibilities include the oversight and development of an internal asset management capability and establishing a scalable, robust and cost efficient operating model.

    Julian has had a long career in financial services, working predominately for asset management companies but also in retail banking and strategic consulting. His previous employers include some of the UK’s leading financial institutions as well as smaller companies. Prior to joining Railpen in 2015 Julian was a founding partner and COO of River and Mercantile Asset Management.

    Victoria Bell, Director of Trustee Accounting

    Victoria has been with the organisation since 1997 working in a number of senior finance roles. She is currently responsible for scheme and investment accounting policy, investment tax, budgets and costs of the scheme’s pooled investment vehicles, the daily pricing and trading of units in the scheme’s pooled investment vehicles. She also represents the business on the Pensions Research Accountants Group.

    Victoria is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales, with which she qualified in the mid-1990s while working at one of the big four accountancy firms. She holds a BA Hons. (Cantab.) in Mathematics.
  • Paul Nathan small

    Paul Nathan, Chief Operating Officer

    Paul joined in November 2016 and is responsible for Railpen’s operating model, including Technology, Middle Office, Business Change and Finance functions.

    Paul has held COO roles at the Church Commissioners, Oxford University’s Saïd Business School, and Old Mutual Global Investors. He began his career as a solicitor specialising in intellectual property. 

    Paul holds a degree in Physics from Oxford and an MBA from INSEAD. 

  • Jan Baker2

    Jan Baker, People Business Partner

    Jan joined Railpen in June 2016. She is Railpen’s People Team lead and her responsibilities include recruitment, talent management and people development for the business. Jan has over fifteen years’ experience working as both an HR generalist and recruitment specialist within the UK finance industry.

    She has experience in the design and delivery of creative HR solutions in response to the need for innovation and return on investment in the Financial Services Sector.
  • Ciaran

    Ciarán Barr, Investment Director

    Ciarán is an Investment Director at Railpen, responsible for overseeing the management of the schemes. He manages various investment functions, ranging from advising on client strategy to strategic modelling and macro issues, as well as taking into account sustainable ownership issues. He also oversees the investment risk and performance function.

    He joined Railpen in 2009 and was previously responsible for leading the strategy team in generating views and ideas on international economies and financial markets, as well as recommendations across the portfolios.

    As part of his role, he regularly presents to the Trustee on a wide variety of matters. Most of Ciarán’s previous career was spent at Deutsche Bank, including the role of Chief UK Economist. He holds an honours degree in Economics.

  • Paul

    Paul Bishop, Investment Director

    Paul’s responsibilities include management and oversight of all private market and alternative investments and he takes an active role in sourcing, negotiating and executing investments. He joined Railpen in 2011 and was previously responsible for leading the investment management team in researching, selecting and monitoring the schemes' investments across multiple asset classes.

    Prior to joining the company, Paul was Chief Investment Officer of a UK life assurance and asset management company responsible for the management of portfolios across public and private markets. Paul also has experience as a Senior Investment Consultant. He is a CFA Charterholder and a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst.
  • Chris-Hitchen

    Chris Hitchen, CEO RPMI Railpen

    Chris is the CEO of the Railways Pension Trustee Company and its operating subsidiaries, RPMI and Railpen Investments.

    He sits on the Board of the Investor Forum and is a Director of the Pensions Quality Mark. From 2010-2015 Chris was a Trustee Member of NEST and was the first Chair of its Investment Committee. He is a former Chairman of the Pensions and Lifetime Savings Association and of its Investment Council. Chris is an Actuary, with 30 years' experience in pensions and investments. In 2015, Chris was appointed an Honorary Fellow of the CFA Society of the UK (FSIP).
  • Richard Williams

    Richard Williams, Investment Director

    Richard joined Railpen in 2014 and is responsible for various Pooled Funds with a particular focus on the multi-asset Growth Fund.

    He spent much of his career in senior investment and leadership positions in the commercial asset management industry. In previous roles he managed global fixed income portfolios on behalf of Railpen.

    Richard has been awarded degrees in Mathematics from Oxford University and Business Administration from CASS Business School. He is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.
